Three Kuan Yin (Avalokitesvara) Bodhisattva’s Great Compassion Empowerment Dharma Assemblies complete with their concluding release of captive beings were conducted at the Thai Son Pagoda, a lovely temple located at the base of one of the five marble mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam on December 15, 16, and 17. Khartas were offered, along with chanting and prostrations to the Holy ones. A fish release was held after the ceremonies on the Coco River near the temple and a second release was held later in downtown DaNang on the Han River. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, who transmitted the empowerment dharma said that the most important part of the ceremony was freeing captive living beings and that He would not have favored doing this ceremony if that part was not included.

After the ceremonies Gesang Suolang Rinpoche and I read from a preliminary translation of Learning From Buddha, a very important book on the reasons for practicing correct cultivation and preparation; the three practices that are part of any complete dharma practice; and how to actually do both to become a Holy Person and ultimately a Buddha. This little booklet is so important that anyone coming to see the Buddha must have the book with them and be tested on his or her understanding of its content. The book also explains the meaning and nature of the two photos of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III that were displayed above the altar and twelve principles that the Buddha teaches: 1-Stay far away from feudal superstition and the like, 2-Abide by the precepts, 3-Take Great Compassion as the foundation, 4-Do not do anything that is evil, 5-Do all things that are good, 6-Give up self-interest and benefit others, 7-Endure insult and adversity, 8-Practice humility, 9-Purify your own mind, 10-Treat all living beings equally as family members, and 11-Know all phenomena are governed by cause and effect.
