Avram Alpert has published an especially delightful and informative essay on why reincarnation is an important concept for us to have in our modern world and why it was a mistake to not include it as part of modern secular Buddhism. It is an excellent supplement to the earlier article by Evan Thompson on “Why I Am Not a Buddhist” we reviewed a few weeks ago. It includes many ideas from other cultures and belief systems on why reincarnation makes sense, some I had heard and some new. It did not include two of my favorites: The Lakota concept of “Mitakuye Oyasin” and a Jewish expression I have heard that I believe is from the Torah of “The reward for a good life is a Good Life.” The later one sort of covers your bets on the hereafter and the former furthers the concept of the fact we are all connected–and that includes more than just humans. This article is definitely worth reading. Thanks to Dani Tuji Rinpoche for spotting it.
