All wisdom comes from dhyana. Without dhyana, what arises is worldly cleverness or intelligence. The dhyana of practitioners of non-Buddhist ways falls into the categories of two types of emptiness—nihilistic emptiness and only emptiness. ). Such dhyana is scattered intelligence, which also cannot result in ending of the cycle of birth and death. Thus, if you practice giving yet do not observe the precepts, it will be difficult to pursue the cultivation of dhyana and wisdom.
