On Tuesday, October 5, and again on Saturday, October 9, 2021, we listened to a reading of a preliminary translation of the first part of another discourse expounded by H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III when He visited Taiwan in 1995. This time His Holiness will answer a question posed by a disciple concerning the differences between esoteric and exoteric Buddhism and the criticism that those who learn the esoteric school are only able to recite mantras and do not understand the sutras and thus lack knowledge. In that session, the Buddha Master explained that learning esoteric dharma involves first learning exoteric dhama. Anyone wanting to become a vajra master must first understand exoteric Buddhism and there are two methods to understand exoteric Buddhism. The Buddha Master said: “One method is to exert effort in learning the sutras. Another method is your Buddha Master teaches you a type of wisdom that enables you to open yourself to the sutra teachings. That is a very fast method. Sometimes learning sutra teachings one day with that method is equal to other people learning sutra teachings for ten years.“ In this discourse He also tells us about the different schools and treatises studied in the esoteric schools and how the Tibetans used formal debates to deeply learn and were thus tested in what they had learned. The Buddha Master also discusses the various types of inner tantric initiation that can be practiced within esoteric Buddhism, which we continued at our classes on October 12 and will again on October 16.
