Discussion Held on “Expounding the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra”

Studying the Heart Sutra at recent retreat at the temple.
Studying “Expounding the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra” at the Holy Vajrasana Temple.

We held our first zoom session this morning and were able to discuss various questions for this part of DCB26-How to Realize Prajna. I gave an overview of the entire sutra-Expounding the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra and asked the homework questions from the first half of Lesson 36 on causality and began the discussion on the rules and methods of continual practice. I realized that I did not explain why this holy text is not considered a commentary on the Heart Sutra, but rather an actual transmission of dharma to enable us to realize prajna and obtain enlightenment. The Buddha Master used the structure of the Heart Sutra to impart dharma to us. Another point that I should have made after someone said she did not think we could understand cause and effect, was that she was absolutely correct–only a Buddha can truly understand how causality works. We need to focus on just creating good karma and making sure we have the retaining wall of good karma to push back our negative karma until we are better able to dispose of it. We cannot ignore cause and effect.

We were only able to answer about half of the questions in this lesson and agreed to add another class to the schedule and meet next week at the same time on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 9:00 am on zoom. You do NOT need to register again, but can use the same meeting code for all the sessions in this series. On the following Saturday, October 1, 2022 we will start Lesson 37 on preliminary practice dharma. If you have not already done so, please CLICK for link to register for this class and join us.
