This video of a discussion on LFBCS Course B26-Milarepa between course facilitator Don Asper and myself discusses the course and the importance of studying the lives of saints or holy people.
I also request serious students to pick one of the great patriarchs or matriarchs of any of the great traditions of Buddhism–in ancient India, China, Tibet, Japan, or any of the other Buddhist traditions including those of Southeast Asia and study one or more of the related biographies and offer a course like Don has done that shows how that person became a holy person; his or her relationship to his or her guru or master; what dharma was followed; and how he or she lived and cultivated goodness, eliminated evil, and developed bodhichitta. Just let me know which bio you would like to facilitate and I will help you set up the course. We require two prerequisite courses to be able to take the bio courses: D35(A)-128 Evil & Erroneous Views (from the Supreme and Unsurpassable Mahamudra of Liberation) and G03(A)-Evolution of Buddhism and the Five Vidyas. The first is to enable you to critique the Bio and the second is for you to understand the context for that particular saint and sect within the overall evolution of Buddhism. Please note that both of these prerequisites are at the Auditing Student level.
