We will hold our first class on The Great Dharma of Zen on May 3, starting at 2:00 pm, PDT. This series of classes is based on a discourse and dharma transmission from H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III given in 2013. This class will introduce the history and concepts of zen practice in preparation for the actual meditation practices. The discourse was given in response to western students who had beseeched the Buddha to impart dharma that would enable them to meditate effectively. The teaching quickly morphed into a test on who was qualified to give discourses on the Buddha-dharma and teach meditation. Later that year His Holiness performed an initiation and transmission involving mantras that are necessary in the practice of zen. This great dharma enables everyone to understand what the standard, proper practice of zen actually is. Zen is used here to mean “meditation” being a Japanese transliteration of the Chinese Ch’an which represents the Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit word dhyana. Although there are examples in the text from Ch’an temples and stories about famous zen patriarchs, it is not about the Zen Sect many of us are familiar with.
