Reuters carried a beautiful photo essay on an illegal female Buddhist novice monk ordination ceremony held at the Songdhammakalyani Monastery in Nakhon Pathom province, Thailand on December 5, 2018.  Since 1928 it has been illegal for women to be ordained in Thailand, as only men can become monks and novices in Thailand. Dhammananda Bhikkhuni, the 74-year-old abbess of this unofficial Monastery was ordained in 2001 in Sri Lanka. She can only ordain the women as novices as the full ordination requires the participation on male monks and they are prohibited from participating.
