H.H. Dharma King Penor Rinpoche-REVISED

The Palyul network of monasteries is the largest of the six main subsects within the Nyingma sect. There are more than four hundred of its branch monasteries spread throughout Tibet and its dharma centers are spread around the world. Not only was H.H. Dharma King Penor the eleventh lineage holder of the Palyul dharma lineage, he was also the supreme dharma king of the Nyingma lineage from 1993-2001. His main monastery in southern India, Namdroling monastery, is, I believe the largest of the Tibetan Monasteries with 6, 000 monks and 1,000 nuns. I have added below several youtube videos of his Maha Parinirva Puja (2012), Cremation (2013), and the Consecration of his Stupa (2018) ceremonies at that monastery. Alex provided a link in the comments section below of the Enthronement Ceremony held on July 21, 2014 in Tibet for his reincarnation (yangsi).

H.H. Dharma King Penor Pema Norbu Palyul Rinpoche (1932-2009).

The Big Blue Treasure book H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III contains many stories about the Dharma King including one about when he was still a small boy. “…An elderly man walked up to him and insisted that the rinpoche perform for him the Phowa Dharma. In his boyish innocence, the rinpoche consented and practiced that dharma in accordance with its rituals. After a short while, the rinpoche was surprised to discover that the elderly man had already passed away. Facing the corpse that lay before him, the rinpoche practiced dharma once more in order to revive the elderly man. After the elderly man regained consciousness, the rinpoche blew from his mouth a long puff. However, the elderly man said, ‘Heavens! Why did the rinpoche cause me to return? I was already in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss of Amitabha Buddha!’ “

The Big Blue Book also tells us that “when the Dharma King was conducting a Medicine Buddha Dharma Assembly, rainbows soared from the mandala offering plate. Additionally, nectar overflowed from the skull-cup……..Very few rinpoches who are at the same level of Dharma King Penor are able to endure the difficulties that Dharma King Penor has endured. Due to this great vows of great compassion and his ceaseless determination, the rinpoche is not troubled by any difficulty or obstacle he may face.” Rainbows also soared around his residence when he passed on in 2009.

When Dharma King Penor read a preliminary edition of the Big Blue Book he thought that the book was of limitless benefit to living beings and was so moved that he wrote the following letter of prophecy and congratulations:

Honorable Rinpoches:

H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Yangwo Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu, who has been recognized by numerous greatly virtuous and eminent monastics, propagates the Buddha-dharma. His Holiness’s book A Treasury of the True-Buddha-Dharma manifests full proficiency in the Five Vidyas. That book is being published and distributed in response to the requests of Buddhists all over the country. The publication and distribution of that book will cause the Buddha-dharma to abide in this world eternally and will provide the karmic conditions for living beings to obtain immediate happiness, leave the sufferings and hardship of samsara forever, and attain the ultimate state of Buddhahood.

    • Thanks for the link. I had not seen the enthronement, but had watched Penor Rinpoche’s cremation ceremony. I added that to this article along with an earlier video that included the rainbows mentioned above. There is also a beautiful video of the consecration of his stupa.
